Mediterranean Reflections

There is something about Italy that always feels familiar.

Perhaps it is the way life unfolds around long lunches and evening walks. The way beauty is not treated as something extraordinary, but woven into everyday moments. Or perhaps it is the effortless balance between chaos and calm.

My recent journey took me to two places that could not have been more different: Naples and Capri.

Naples is vibrant, loud, and endlessly alive. A city of narrow streets, buzzing scooters, and conversations spilling out onto crowded piazzas. It moves fast and asks you to surrender to its rhythm.

And then there is Capri.

Just a short journey across the water, yet an entirely different world. Calm and luminous, rising from the sea like a jewel. White stone paths, sunlit gardens, and a sense of quiet elegance that has inspired generations of artists and dreamers.

During the trip, one book remained close at hand: Capri Dolce Vita from Assouline. Its pages beautifully capture what makes the island so captivating—not only its landscape, but a way of life rooted in simplicity, beauty, and a deep connection to nature.

Perhaps that is why this journey unexpectedly brought me back to the origins of The Sentimentalist.

To pearls.

Looking out at the Mediterranean, they felt more relevant than ever. There is something inherently timeless about the soft glow of a pearl against sun-kissed skin, or the cool shine of silver catching the last light of the day. Effortless, natural, and quietly elegant.

As summer approaches, we find ourselves drawn back to these materials. To their simplicity. Their connection to the sea. And to the idea that the most beautiful things rarely need to demand attention.

Sometimes inspiration is found in unexpected places — in the contrast between a bustling city and a quiet island, and in the shimmer of sunlight on the water.
